Are you a music company that is confused by the new music industry?
Well you have come to the right place! I created this site to help music company owners navigate through the sometimes complicated industry by providing valuable information and free and inexpensive tools, like eBooks and agreement templates.
I began my career over 15 years ago working in legal affairs at Virgin Records America. Over the years I have consistently represented music companies in all aspects of the business. I have seen first-hand the dramatic shift that the industry has taken, moving from a sales-driven model (i.e., selling CDs and downloads) to a subscription-streaming model coupled with artist branding (i.e., sponsorships, endorsements). There was no official announcement of the switch so even the most seasoned professionals are baffled as to how it all works..but I do.
Today, you must have a keen understanding of how to make the “360 deals” work for you because the lucrative parts of the business are the non-record opportunities, such as licensing, branding, merchandising, and touring.
Over my career I have represented indie record labels and music publishers with Grammy-nominated artists, producers, and songwriters, high profile music catalogues, and served as music production counsel for film and tv projects. I have negotiated deals with all of the major labels and music publishers, and created hundreds of hybrid deals, creative deals to fit the ever changing landscape of the music industry.
So let’s get started!
I recommend that you start by downloading my Free Ebook “How To Make It In Today’s Music Industry” so that you can get an overview of the new music industry.
Next, here are some of my most popular music-related posts. If a topic sounds interesting, take a look:
Lastly, subscribe to my newsletter by downloading the eBook and you will receive periodic emails when new content is posted.
Throughout my material I share my experiences, lessons learned, and keys to success. I also pull in an expert now and then for an interview to give a primer on non-legal subjects and get their perspective on what it takes to be successful in the industry. There is no better place to find more accurate and helpful information than directly from those that have been there and done it.
So, feel free to browse around! The highlighted posts above touch on mainstream material, but there are a number of other posts, videos, and interviews on the site that may help you (I suggest using the search box).
